Spring is Just Around the Corner!

It has been a long Winter up here in Iowa and I'm definitely ready for Spring.

Lucky Lang's winter

I love Spring, but Iowa Winters do have their advantages.

Before long the song birds will be returning, but the eagles will leave.

The grass will soon start turning green, but the snowmen will melt away.

The bicycles will be taken off their storage racks, but the skiing and sledding will cease.

The shoveling will subside, but the backaches will go away as well.  WAIT!!!  Those are both good things.

I'm definitely ready for Spring!

7,000 without power for a week!!!

Over 75,000 Iowa customers lost their power last Saturday from the ice storm of the century!

Ice Storm

Efforts to restore power have been thwarted by snowy, windy weather with gusts up to 55 mph.  The power companies just cannot put their buckets in the air in those conditions.  Although they could use the break from tireless efforts to put lines back up, they have lost over 60 hours of repair time (over 2 days) to the winds.

The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives has coordinated communications and repair efforts and gives us this chart showing who is still without power.

Outage Update

What would you do without electricity or water (since well pumps run on electricity) for a week?  How would you survive?  No TV, no vacuum, no washing machine, no cell phone charger, no computer (what....that's crossing the line), no alarm clock, no radio, no electric stove, no shower, no bath, no water to drink, and no heat.  Would you melt snow for water to drink?  If you have no fireplace, what would you do to keep your house warm enough to keep you and the water pipes in the walls from freezing?  Would you use other fuels to burn in portable heaters and risk carbon monoxide poisoning?

Thousands in Iowa have had to make these choices over the past 7 days.  What would you do?  How would you survive?

Thousands Without Power As Outages Continue in Iowa!

There are still, after 5 days, over 12,000 people without power in Iowa!

Power Pole Down

The Quad-City Times crews have been out trying to bring coverage to all of us on the damage caused by the Saturday storm.  Initially, over 75,000 people lost their power including a nursing home with 180 patients who had to use power generators for 3 days and walk the halls with flashlights.

The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives has been doing a great job keeping everyone informed about the progress on the dire situation.

Ice Build Up

Most of the damage was caused as power poles and power lines snap from the weight of the ice build up.

1285 UnderwoodPower lines to this farm house had snapped a block down the road which rendered the owner without power and without water for 3 days as their well pump runs on electricity.

My buyer from California still wanted to see it as he was looking for his peace in the country.  So, The Quad Cities Favorite Realtor drove his all-wheel drive SUV to Durant, Iowa, broke out the flashlights, and sold him his dream!

My mom always told me, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!"  I guess that's just part of the Iowa work ethic (or maybe it's the german ethnicity in me).

Iowa gets hit again...this time it's snow and ICE!

Davenport Iowa Gets Another 2.7"!

Iowa Winters

Please keep your prayers going for the utility workers who are working tirelessly as they risk their lives to restore power to ALL Iowans.
