Student Built Home Program

Student Built Home Program by Lucky Lang qcfsbr.com

This home is just being completed in Northwest Davenport, Iowa by a great group of youth from the Davenport and North Scott Schools.  There was a very nice reception May 23 for these students and their families where $10,000 of scholarships were handed out!

This program was started in 1974 and students have built about 20 homes over the years!  The Greater Davenport Board of Realtors(R) continues to be a proud sponsor of this event and welcomes all volunteers to get involved by calling the Program Coordinator at (563) 386-6030.

Lucky, this is a great story!  This is a win-win for all involved.  I love to see our kids making a difference.

Lucky, there have been a series of homes built in Lancaster by vocational students as part of their training.  The houses have tended to be of excellent quality.

What an awesome program -- some great homes get built, and the kids get scholarships!  I don't think we have anything like this here, but it would be worth looking into.

Maggie,

This really is a great group to represent our youth today!

Brian,

We have found that here as well.  The students have to fix their mistakes because they haven't learned how to hide them yet!

Larry,

The house was absolutely beautiful inside!

Jim & Maria,

Some of the youth will use their scholarships to buy tools for their trade.

Thanks everyone for commenting!

Lucky--Forest Lake School District in MN just completed and sold their first home earlier this year. It was a tremendous learning experience for those involved. The money did not go to scholarships as in Iowa. But will be used to fund the next project as I understand it. I did two posts on the program....and love reading about other school districts with similar projects. Thanks for the post!

Teri,

Why don't you link your posts here so that people can get more ideas.

Hi Lucky--

I did two posts on this: One was my very first post and the other was a follow up after the house sold. Here they are:

Forget Jack! This House was Built by Students--Forest Lake High School Students!

UPDATE on "Forget Jack" This House was Built by Forest Lake High School Students!

Teri,

Thanks!  Maybe someone will use these ideas to help the youth in their area with a "Class" Project!
